This mixed collection focuses on the dramatic Cornish coastline featuring wonderful paintings by Andrew Tozer, Helen Jones, Myles Oxenford, Paul Lewin and Philip Hogben!
The dramatic Porthcothan Cliffs is featured in this show with a selection of Paul Lewin cliff paintings. Lewin’s relationship with landscape is intense; he seems absorbed, almost subsumed into it, driven by a restless energy that is characteristic of the sort of places he is drawn to – the extreme edges of land, jutting promontories and tidal shores where frontiers between land and sea are blurred and perspectives ever changing as the sky. His practice is to complete a painting at a single sitting if possible. Sometimes a piece will resolve itself quickly, in a couple of hours or so; more often, he will be working out in the open for five or six hours or until the light goes.
In this show we see Myles working in his typical pastel colour palette using blocks of colour as a way of abstracting his surroundings but also to hint at forms and shapes within the landscape.
“These are escapist paintings in many ways. They aren’t about the geography of the place but more about the atmosphere and emotional response . Playing with the compositions and light, making many layers to the painting, I hope to create something beyond a straightforward representation, that for me – is a true capturing.”
We highly recommend visiting this show as you will see how each of our artists work in an entirely unique and individual manner when depicting the scenes around the Cornish Coast.
